2D Media: Mixed Media

So, I finished up my two other womb paintings....sort of. I used acrylic paint, gouache, and colored pencil throughout each piece. For the black and white ultrasound, I wanted to add the word 'hamburger' on it because that's what my ultrasound said. I guess my parents thought that was more amusing than putting 'it's a girl'. Now I am not so sure I want to add it. I'm happy with how it turned out and I don't want to NOT like it if I add the text. My rainbow twin womb got some extra detail with white colored pencil. I thought using that was nicer than any other color because that was really the only color I didn't use. I also included an image of my Ancient Egypt judgement comic which I didn't realize I hadn't taken a picture of until after turning it in for the mid-term.

2D Media: Mixed Media Update

If I haven't already stated it enough I'll say it again, I am not used to taking pictures of my work and especially ones that are in progress updates. I am trying to do better with it though. I did another piece regarding heaven, Earth, and hell that is similar to the one I already created. With this one I spent more time thinking about HOW I was going to demonstrate my take on something that has been done time and time again. I'm sure I have mentioned it before that I wanted to be more abstract with my work but I think I still have to put time into thinking HOW I want to go about it. Below are images of completed work, works in progress, and some reference images.

Reference Materials for 2D Methods: Mixed Media Work

Approaching the mid-point of the semester, I am providing the reference images I used to inspire me in making the works I have created for my art class. Every critique we have had has exposed me to questions that make me think so much more about my creative process. When I went into this class I wanted to explore the more abstract or active art. I didn't want to scrutinize and pre-plan every move I made. But, I think I need to put that type of art-making-process for a later time. I think I need to understand why I do certain things other than "I wanted to cover my mistake up" or that "I just felt like putting that there". Once I have focused on why I do the things I do, I can move to more abstract work.

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm jumping around but this is a concept that I've been wanting to touch on since the beginning of the project. I created a work that is inspired by heaven, hell, and the Earthly bounds between them. This is only one view of how heaven is an ethereal place, Earth is the solid place where we spend most of our lives, and hell is the hot and dark place beneath the Earth.

2D Methods- At Home Progress

I am very pleased to say that I finished my plant life cycle piece. It occurred to me that I find it very hard to remember that this course is meant to incorporate multiple medias in a work of art. I am so used to having to use one specific medium to create. My professor had to ask me how I was going to make my plant life cycle a mixed medium piece. It took me aback that I didn't know what I was going to do. In the end, I was able to apply colored pencil to the acrylic paint I had already applied. It fortunately worked out because the colored pencil was able to give me the detail that I couldn't get with the acrylic paint.

2D Methods- At Home Progress

Good news! I was able to change my project theme from Nature to Life and Death. I initially wanted to avoid a topic that was on the darker side but I guess the temptations were too great. I feel as if I am much more invested and interested in this topic for the sake that life and death is a constant factor. The idea, the presence, the constant reminder that everything organic is mortal has been present since the beginning of time. Yet, we still don't know for sure what happens to us after we die. Through this project I hope to explore the beauties in life and the mysteries in after death. Of the two works I created, the first one is focused on life. It is more specifically the tree of life. I discovered that the tree of life is present in a variety of cultures with their own individual version of it. The second is focused on the idea of Reincarnation. From what I have gathered, reincarnation is the idea that when a person or an animal dies the soul transfers to another body. My piece is my own interpretation of that idea. The third is still in the early stages of making but it is focused on a plant's life cycle.

2D Methods-Mixed Media

For my mixed media class, we are tasked with an assignment that will be an ongoing project till the end of the semester. The goal is to make multiple works of art that revolve around a particular theme. I have settled on Nature but I am also speculating another path. For this topic I have created a small work using pencils and colored pencils to represent the beautiful and natural colors of the American Bullfrog. This frog is common in Ohio and is what we usually hear making resonating sounds as the night goes on. I used a number of online sources as inspiration and reference which are provided at the bottom of the article. I am also showing some of the pictures of this piece as it was in progress.
